2010 Season Preview

With graduation spelling the loss of as many as eleven players, including six starters from the 2009 lineup, the upcoming season presents challenges and opportunities for the Laurentian men's soccer team.

"I think we have three great building blocks for this team - midfielder/striker James Bond, who had a great year for us last year, as well as Stephen Fattore and centre defender Daniel O'Connor", states coach Carlo Castrechino.

Now entering his third year with the team, P.E.I. native Davor Alisic will be looked upon to provide scoring, although the man who has guided the team for more than a decade understands that his side is hardly a "run and gun" powerhouse.

"Team defense will be key", says Castrechino. "We're going to have to concentrate on defending as a team." The loss of Scott Cliff in net means that the Voyageurs will be much less experienced at the last line of defense, with rookies likely to see playing time in key situations this fall.

Thankfully, the Voyageurs will feature a pair of freshman who should be able to step in immediately and contribute. Midfielder Liam Dougherty (Wexford United) returns to Sudbury, where he recently showcased his talents at the OFSAA "AAA" Soccer Championships while solid defender Cameron Brooks (Woodbridge) is also welcomed to the fold.

"True to his upbeat character, coach Castrechino anxiously awaits the development of this intriguing mix of talent. "I am honestly quite excited about the upcoming year, with so many new faces and some different formations."

"And despite the notable turnover on the roster, he sees no reason to lower the expectations substantially. "The goal every year is the playoffs, but I want a home playoff game - so top four in the East, I think, is realistic."
