 Laurentian Voyageurs Head
Coach Virgil Hill
VIRGIL HILL
Position: Head Coach
Experience: 6th year
Since arriving on campus at Laurentian University in 2000, Virgil Hill has had one goal in
mind, return the pride and tradition to Voyageur basketball. After taking over a program
that was the height of its success, and fell short of a National Championship in 2000 Hill
has spent 5 years rebuilding Laurentian Men's Basketball into a program that makes
Voyageur fans proud to cheer for the Blue and Gold. When Hill took over as Head Coach he
set a plan in motion that he would raise the academic expectations of the player's in the
program.
The 35 year old Hill was named the 8th men's basketball coach at Laurentian University
on July 1, 2000. Hill's first season was all about coaching a team with only returning
players and no recruits after losing 67% of the team's offensive production of the
previous season. That season the team went 18-13 finishing fourth in the conference,
losing to the eventual conference champions in the semi-final.
The next season saw a slight decline as Hill had difficulty in landing top recruits.
Last season saw a much improved roster and despite not qualifying for the CIS Nationals
the team played nearly every Top 10 team proving they can compete with the best teams in
the CIS and battled.
In five years as Head Coach, Hill has a career record of 66 wins and 96 losses.
Hill's coaching career began in 1994 as a graduate assistant at Simon Fraser University
under former National Team Head Coach Jay Triano and who is also a current Toronto Raptor
assistant coach.
"I am confident in my staff and the personnel on the team and what we can do with
the program this year. Being able to compete for a National Championship requires having
experienced players and depth with legitimate size. I think we have a blueprint that will
lead to success. Everyone will be proud of the team, and where we can take
theprogram
back to Halifax.
Hill is no stranger to International basketball as he has been involved with Canada
Basketball since 1999. In 2002 he was named assistant coach of the National Development
Team and in 2003 was again the assistant coach of the National Development Team that
captured a bronze medal at the World University game in Daegu, Korea.
Hill earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Simon Fraser in 1994 as a
player for the Clan. In 1993 Hill also lettered in Football playing wide receiver. In 1998
Hill completed the Professional Development Program becoming a certified Secondary School
Science and Phys Ed. Teacher.
Hill was captain of the Clan his senior year winning the team's most inspirational
award. Hill tallied 907 career points along with 494 career rebounds which include career
highs of 17 rebounds and 28 points.
Hill is married to the former Catherine Garland, the couple had a son Grant born
earlier this year.
