Today marked the date for the battle of northern supremacy in the OUA women's hockey division as the Nipissing Lakers traveled directly west to play their northern rival, the Laurentian Voyageurs.
The Lakers coming into this game had lost their previous game to the place York Lions and thus giving the Lakers a noticeable competitive edge.
The Voyageurs on the other hand before this game were on a five game loss streak that most definitely needed to be snapped in hopes for the Vees to remain competitive for a playoff spot.
The first period started slow as both teams were starting to get their legs under them. Laurentian, more specifically Carley Olivier, would be the first to show offensive life and Olivier pushed the puck into the zone and picked a short side corner over Danika Ranger.
The second place Lakers wouldn't let the Vees have the puck and the lead for very long as the second period would be a three goal offensive attack from the Lakers to put them up by two. Jetta Derenoski, Maria Dominico and Hunter Mosher would all be given a plus one in the goal category for the Lakers.
The third period was destined to be a big period for the Vees as they were well aware of what was needed if they wanted to come out on top of this game.
Regan Toltesi would cut into the Lakers lead just five minutes into the third period as she was fed a pass from Annie Sheridan and Karissa Hoskin where she would slap home a bar down goal and giving the Voyageurs just a one goal deficit.
Unfortunately, Keara Amson would pot the final goal of the game and make the final score 4-2 Lakers and eventually moving them into first place in the OUA.
The Vees on the other hand have been handed another loss giving them their sixth straight loss.
This will be the final game before 2019 for the Voyageurs when they restart their season against the Waterloo Warriors January 5th and look to try different approaches in hope to keep a playoff spot.
