TRK | Wallingford Claims Silver, Women’s Relay Grabs Bronze at 54th Annual York Open
The Laurentian University Voyageurs continued their indoor track and field season with several standout performances this past weekend at the 54th Annual York Open, hosted by York University at the Toronto Track and Field Centre.
Leading the charge for the Vees, Keon Wallingford (North Bay) secured a silver medal in the men's 1,000m. His time of 2:33.88 marks an OUA Championship qualifying standard and stands as the eighth-fastest time in program history. In the same race, Shiloh Sauve (Sudbury), a first-year nursing student, placed fourth with a personal-best 2:34.60, also qualifying him for the OUA Championships.
The Vees also found the podium in the women's 4x400m relay, where an "all-Sudbury" squad featuring Milena Kulik, Lucia Salmaso, Finlay Cuza, and Alissa Diavolitsis captured bronze. Their time of 4:12.08 is the third-fastest in school history, missing the program record by less than a second.
Nine other Vees established new personal bests including Claire Scholl (1000m – 3:04.55), Charli Borak (1000m – 3:12.30), Georgia Lepage (1000m – 3:12.44), Valerie Vaillancourt (1500m – 4:55.72), Charlotte Grenier (1500m – 5:02.86), Lucia Salmaso (600m – 1:47.25), Finlay Cuza (60m – 8.37), Braeden Estabrooks (1500m – 4:17.56 , 3000m – 9:06.19), and Alan Wilkin (600m - 1:30.59).
"Coming off a quick turnaround from McGill last weekend, I was impressed by our team's resilience," said Vees Head Coach Darren Jermyn. "Keon and Shiloh executed great teamwork to secure OUA qualifying marks, and our women's 4x400m team posted their best time of the year despite competing on tired legs."
The Voyageurs wrap up the regular season in mid-February at the University of Toronto's Hal Brown Memorial (Feb 13) and the Guelph Gryphons Last Chance Meet (Feb 14).
