WBB | Laurentian Suffers Defeat in First Road Game of Season Against Ottawa
The Laurentian women's basketball team opened their road schedule in the nation's capital against the reigning OUA champion Ottawa Gee-Gees, who used a dominant second half to pull away for a 69–51 victory.
The Voyageurs started strong, as Emilie Lafond scored eight of their first 11 points to help her team jump out to an 11–6 lead. Ottawa responded late in the quarter, with Bailey Russell scoring eight points in the final three minutes, but Laurentian held on for a narrow 15–14 lead after one. A gritty second quarter followed, with both teams scoring 13 points as the Vees carried a slim one-point advantage into halftime.
Laurentian came out hot to start the third quarter, draining three three-pointers in the opening three minutes to go up by three. However, the Gee-Gees answered in emphatic fashion with a 17–1 run to seize control of the game. A four-point play from Audrey-Anne Labrèche ended the surge, but Ottawa still held a 51–42 lead heading into the final frame. The fourth quarter was all Ottawa, as they held Laurentian to a season-low nine points while adding 18 of their own to seal the win.
Allie McCarthy (27 points) and Bailey Russell (25 points) led the way for the Gee-Gees, who earned their first victory of the season. For Laurentian, cold shooting (36% from the field) and 22 turnovers proved costly as they fell to 1–2 on the year.
The Voyageurs continue their road trip tomorrow against Carleton, while Ottawa hosts Nipissing.
