WBB | Laurentian Suffers Narrow Defeat Against Waterloo, Drops to 2–4
Coming off an impressive win over Laurier, the Laurentian women's basketball team aimed to complete a perfect road trip against Waterloo. However, despite a strong fight, the Voyageurs came up short, falling 67–58.
The first quarter was tightly contested, with both teams defending well. Waterloo held a slim 16–12 lead after ten minutes of play. The Warriors extended their lead to six early in the second, but a Jemaya Chinyelugo old-fashioned three-point play brought the Vees back within three. However, the hosts closed the quarter on a dominant 18–6 run to take control heading into halftime.
The third quarter was the reverse of the second, as Laurentian outscored Waterloo 22–10. Audrey-Anne Labreche caught fire from beyond the arc, draining four three-pointers in the frame, including one that cut the deficit to three heading into the fourth. Early in the final quarter, Cadence Pecore nailed a triple to tie the game at 50. The Voyageurs briefly took leads of 52–50 and 54–53, but nine late points from Waterloo's Ghiselle Poblete sealed the win for the Warriors, who improved to 3–2, while Laurentian dropped to 2–4.
A key storyline for Laurentian was the quiet night from starters Alexia Schryburt and Emilie Lafond, who combined for just two points. For Waterloo, Jaime Newell was outstanding, finishing with 13 points and 20 rebounds. Ultimately, the free-throw line proved decisive, as the Warriors went to the stripe 36 times, compared to 17 attempts for the Voyageurs.
Laurentian returns home next weekend to host Queen's and Ontario Tech.
